CAPD

Learners with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) are typically characterized as poor listeners. Despite having normal hearing ability, they have difficulty discriminating, recognizing, and comprehending auditory information. These problems are more pronounced in a noisy room, or when sounds are degraded or distorted. A CAPD can occur as a result of injury to, or disease of, the central nervous system but has also been linked to environmental factors such as a disruptive home life.

A variety of behavioural indicators may point to a CAPD:

  • Frequently misunderstands oral instructions or questions
  • Delays in responding to oral instructions or questions
  • Says "Huh" or "What" frequently
  • Often needs directions or information to be repeated
  • Has problems filtering out background noise
  • Is easily distracted by background noise
  • May have problems with phonics or distinguishing speech sounds
  • May have poor expressive or receptive language
  • May have difficulties with spelling, reading, or other academic skills
  • May display behavioral problems
