Related ConditionsTourette SyndromeTourette's Syndrome is characterized as a Tic disorder. Tics are unexpected, brief motor, or verbal "bursts". Verbal tics are common with this condition, including clicks, grunts, coughs, or words. Verbal tics are often single obscenities or curse words. The lack of control over such tics can be very disruptive in a classroom, making learning and the school years quite difficult for such learners. The disorder can be lifelong and debilitating. It is often accompanied by learning difficulties, attention problems, and obsessive-compulsive behaviour, and is much more likely to occur in boys. A combination of behaviour therapies, medications, and counseling, seems to be effective in helping these learners gain control of their tics, and adapt their behaviours to live relatively normal lives.
