Dealing with LD

Advocacy

Advocacy is the activity of speaking out on one’s own behalf or on behalf of others in order to defend their rights and make sure that equitable services are provided.

  • Parent Advocacy refers to parents advocating for their children, usually for their rights to services in the school system.
  • Self Advocacy is speaking on behalf of oneself, e.g. an adolescent or adult with a learning disability advocating for their rights in education or employment.
  • Systemic Advocacy is usually carried out by an organization seeking changes in policies and practices in order to ensure the rights of a group of individuals, e.g. changes in legislation affecting all individuals with learning disabilities.

In Canada, the rights of individuals with disabilities are covered under the Canadian Human Rights Code. Most provinces have their own Human Rights legislation as well as legislation that deals with rights in the education system. For information about rights of individuals with learning disabilities in Ontario, contact the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario or the resource coordinator at resource@ldao.on.ca.
