Dealing with LD

With early identification, effective instruction, and minor adaptations, most children with an LD can become as successful as any other member of society.

The path from early identification to productive community member, can involve a variety of interventions over the course of many years. Generally, it involves first identifying the LD, having parents come to grips with the fact that their child has an LD, and then developing an understanding of what it means to have a learning disability. It also involves providing the support needed to advance the child's learning skills and encouraging the child to develop alternate strategies of their own to cope with the cognitive and social aspects of having a learning disability. Parents must learn to deal effectively with school administrators, teachers, and psychologists. They must also assume responsibility for their child's social well-being, develop their own understanding of LD, and explore the various options available to their child and to parents of a child with a learning disability.
