Dealing with LD

Research

Learning Disabilities (LD) has been the focus of much public attention and interest in the past few decades. LD more than any other area of special education seems to create many misunderstandings and controversy: There is considerable confusion and disagreement--not just on the part of the general public but among professionals and parents as well--on such basic issues as what is a LD and how students with LD should be taught?

Many professionals and scholars in special education have devoted their careers to the field of learning disabilities in an attempt to better understand its underlying infrastructure. Some focus their resources and energies on improving current methods of assessment and adaptive remediation for specific academic or social skills deficit in the LD student's repertoire; others develop new innovative methods of assessment and remediation inspired by recent technological advancements; while others concentrate on deciphering and understanding factors that affect and influence the cognitive and psychosocial development of individuals with LD. Such research and advancements are developed, with those with LD in mind, but is intended to influence and benefit the entire field of education.
