How To

How to submit and edit Articles:

You must be a member to use this feature.

There are a number of ways to access the Article submission form:

  • Click on the Articles menu link in the right navigation menu to open the menu, then click on "Submit Article", the first item in the Contents menu.
  • Or, click on Edit Content in the MyLDRC submenu. A list of your content will appear (if you have created any). Click on "add article" next to the title for the Articles section of the page

See the FAQ page for a definition of Article.

See the guidelines on the Article submission page for recommendations on article length and formatting.

Step 1

There are four sections in step one:

  1. Required Article Fields:
    • Title: This should be the title of the article.
    • Body Text: Cut and Paste your HTML formatted content into this textarea. It is recommended that you create your articles in a word processor, or a HTML or text editor, then copy that document into the Body Text textarea. There are several ways to copy and paste. Here are a couple of ways:
      • Choose "Select All" from the edit menu of your word processor or editing program, then choose "Copy". This inserts the copied text into your system's clipboard. Switch to your browser and click into the Body Text textarea of the article submission form. Then from your browser's Edit menu choose "Paste", to insert the copied text into the textarea.
      • Or, select the text to be copied by dragging your mouse over the text or by pressing "[Ctrl] A" to select all. Press "[Ctrl] C" to copy the selected text. Switch to your browser and click within the Body Text textarea, then press "[Ctrl] V" to paste the text from the clipboard into the textarea.

  2. Required Topic Fields: The topic fields are used to categorize articles by subject, type of article, and the target audience as a way to aid sorting and searching. At least one selection from each section is required. Multiple selections should be made for articles that fall into more than one topic, type or, group. If there is a more appropriate topic, type, or group, please submit it along with your article submission by typing the suggested category into the corresponding text entry field. You may return and edit these fields at a later time through Edit Contents in the MyLDRC submenu.
  3. Optional Related Links: Up to five related links can be included with each article. These should be links to other's Web sites that have similar information to that in the article. Links can also be add directly into an article with HTML if you choose. Links within pages can link to other content within the LDRC site, such as a project, event, or another article. Include a title, which appears as link text, and the URL for each related link.
  4. *Copyright: You must be the author of an article, or acting on behalf of the author, to submit an article to this site. Do not submit articles without the author's permission. Check the checkbox label "Yes, I wrote this article" to verify that you have permission to submit the document to us.

*Note: Article authors retain full intellectual property rights to content they have produced and submitted to the site. They may edit or delete any of their own material at any time. The LDRC reserves the right to use any author's material within the LDRC Web site to further the public understanding of learning disabilities, but at no time will the LDRC claim ownership or make changes to such material. Usage by the LDRC may include linking to articles or referring to articles in other documents.

Step 2: Preview

Be sure to view your article carefully to ensure that HTML formatting is valid. Articles that have been formatted with invalid HTML, or that break the LDRC site template, in which articles are displayed, will not be approved.

If the preview appears as it should, either choose "Step 3" to include images with the article, or choose "finish" if you are not including images. If the preview does not appear as it should, click on "Edit Article" to return to the previous screen, make your edits, then preview again.

Step 3: Upload Images

If the preview of your article appears as it should, you may then add images to the article. A maximum of five images per article is allowed. These images must be in JPG or PNG format. Because of legal issues with the use of GIF images, GIF images are not accepted. Images that have been uploaded are reproduced as thumbnails and located at the end of the article. You may refer to the thumbnails within the article with [1] inserted at the location where the first image should appear, [2] where the second should appear, an so on up to [5]. Clicking on a thumbnail takes the reader to another page with the full size image. All images must have a description. The description is reproduced as a caption below the thumbnail and full size versions of the image, and as ALT text for that image. ALT text is required for users who cannot see images (e.g. a blind user), or for users using a text based browser. Try to limit descriptions to no more than 15 words.

Members many also use the HTML image element (<img src=" ">) to include images directly into the body of an article, linking to images in another location on the LDRC site. Find yourself a tutorial on inserting images in HTML if you need instructions on including images within the text of an HTML document.

When all your images have been selected and descriptions written for each, click "Upload Images: Finish" to complete the article submission process. The article will then be marked for approval by LDRC review staff, and if accepted will usually be approved within 48 hours.

Editing Articles

An article can be accessed for editing by it's owner by selecting "Edit Contents" from the MyLDRC submenu. Click on "edit", next to the article listing to load it into the article submission form, make your edits, then resubmit the article. Images can also be added or deleted, or descriptions may be edited by clicking the "images" link associated with a particular article listing. The number of images in an article appears beside the link.
