How To

How to use Read this page:

This feature requires HELPRead, available from helpread.net. HELPRead is a Windows-based freeware text-to-speech program that allows you to read aloud text within Web pages, and other documents. This feature has been provided for Windows users who would like to hear LDRC pages read too them. In addition to the HELPRead application, your system must also have a functioning sound card and speakers to take advantage of this feature.

Windows

Internet Explorer

HELPRead operates with Internet Explorer without having to make any changes to the browser or operating system's settings. If you are a novice user and intend on using "read this page", it is recommended that you use HELPRead along with Internet Explorer.

  1. Download the HELPRead installation program from helpread.net, and install it on your system, following the installation prompts.
  2. Open the LDRC page you would like to read aloud in your browser.
  3. Remove navigation links from the page by clicking "print this page". Reading will still work if you skip this step, however you will find there will be a lot of unnecessary reading if you choose to read with the navigation links displayed. See the HELPRead instructions for reading blocks of selected text using your system's clipboard.
  4. Click on "read this page", found on all pages except the HOME page. This will open the HELPRead application, select the text from the page being viewed, insert the text into the HELPRead reader window, and begin reading aloud.

Netscape and Opera

It should be possible to set up a helper application in these browsers to recognize the "bok" file extension, and start the HELPRead program when you click on files with this extension. Helper application support across versions of these browsers is inconsistent, so it may or may not be possible to set up a helper application depending on the version of browser you are using. See your browser's help files for intructions on setting up helper applications. For Netscape and Opera users there are alternate ways to read pages aloud, reading from the clipboard, or using the HELPRead "Web" button.

  1. Download the HELPRead installation program from helpread.net, and install it on your system, following the installation prompts.
  2. Start the HELPRead application and open an LDRC page in your browser.
  3. In HELPRead click the "clip" button, or press F2, or select clipboard from the file menu to activate the HELPRead clipboard function.
  4. In your browser select the text you want to read by dragging your mouse pointer over it, and copy that text to the clipboard either through "copy", in the edit menu, or by pressing "[Ctrl] C". HELPRead will automatically begin reading the copied text. This method also works in Internet Explorer and is preferable for reading smaller blocks of text.
  5. If Netscape or Opera are set as you operating systems default browser, you may click on the "Web" button in HELPRead to select all the text from the most recently active browser window.

Mac

Mac users have text-to-speech built into the Mac operating system. Mac users, see your operating system's documentation for information on using Mac text-to-speech.
