Self-Guided Learning

Saturday September 27, 2003 - 20:54
Learning to Learn is currently on autopilot as I attend to ATutor and getting it out into the world. But, you don't need me to learn from L2L. You can learn on your own, or learn with others taking the course. Use the Forums, AChat, and Users-Online to communicate with others. Create an ATutor account, login to the course, then enroll for full access to all the tools and activities.

Use the weekly announcements below, starting from Week 1 at the bottom of the page (click Page 2), to guide yourself through the course. Read Getting Started For more information about Learning to Learn.

Week 9: Creativity

Sunday December 8, 2002 - 11:01

This week we will look at creativity, the characteristics of creative thought, and the traits people possess that others judge to be creative. A strong understanding of creativity will act as the "glue" to bring together your developing knowledge of yourself into a comprehensive model thinking and learning. Creativity is the most expressive form of intelligence and adaptive behaviour. Begin by reading this week's introduction posted to the discussion forum titled Week 9: Creativity.

Week 8: Problem Solving

Sunday December 1, 2002 - 10:06

This week we will look at skills associated with problem solving. Problem solving is a major component of thinking. Everyday is a string of problem solving activities, from the time you get up in the morning, deciding what to wear, or what to have for breakfast, throughout the day, deciding how to go about your daily activities, to the time you go to bed, you are constantly problem solving. This week pay particular attention to the “Performance Components” activities, and develop a “feeling” for the thinking that occurs while you complete the exercises. Begin by reading this week's introduction posted to the discussion forum titled Week 8: Problem Solving.

Week 7: Writing

Sunday November 24, 2002 - 09:05

This week we will look at the very thought provoking activity of writing. All of the thinking and learning processes you have learned about over the past several weeks will be used in a writing activity as you “think aloud” while you compose. In this last of three modules that look at language, you will gather what you have learned about the nature of the various components of language and merge that knowledge into the model of thinking and learning you have been developing. Begin by reading this week's introduction posted to the discussion forum titled “Week 7: Writing.”

Week 6: Reading

Sunday November 17, 2002 - 10:14

This week we will continue our look at language, with the focus shifting somewhat to developing an understanding of how we process graphical forms of language. While spoken language seems to be learned without effort, reading requires explicit instruction. This week learn about the nature of reading, and the skills that a learner can develop to get the most of learning from print. Try the Scanning Task to develop an understanding of the visual and auditory aspects of reading, and the automation of word recognition skill.

Be sure to read this week's introduction in the Discussion Forum titled Week 6: Reading."

Week 5: Language

Sunday November 10, 2002 - 11:40

This week, and the next two weeks, we will look at language, and how language affects, and is affected by, thinking and learning. Language will be described as a system of symbols humans use to represent meaning. The evolution of languages will be introduced. You will also take a close look at the development of vocabulary as it is learned through imitation, copying what other say, and as it is learned through text, deriving meaning from surrounding words or the context in which new words appear. Be sure to have an advanced dictionary available this week. You will use it to learn about the intricacies of language. Use Merriam-Webster Online if you don't have an advanced dictionary handy.

Be sure to read through this week's introduction in the Discussion Forum titled Week 5: Language

Week 4: Memory

Saturday November 2, 2002 - 14:53   This week will focus on developing your understanding of the nature of memory and the strategies that can be used to improve it. Many mnemonics will be covered this week, demonstrating a variety of elaboration strategies for committing information to memory. To begin this week, after logging into the course visit the L2L General Discussions forum and read Week 4: Memory. Also be sure to read the article "About Memory" and complete the Link Lists on The Link Method page.

Week 3: Learning Styles

Sunday October 27, 2002 - 08:35   This week we'll look at Learning Styles. Styles are preferences or tendencies people exhibit when approaching learning, or interacting with the world. Styles are not abilities, but rather how you go about using those abilities. You will come to notice that you do things in certain ways, using particular strategies that match your abilities. You will also come to notice that people vary in their styles, and approach thinking and learning in different ways. To begin this week read through the introduction in the discussion forum titled Week 3: Learning Styles, then read through the Targets:Outline for this module.
